The endocannabinoid system: how CBD interacts with the body
How does CBD work in the body?
In short
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a signalling network involved in balance across mood, sleep, appetite and more. CBD interacts with this system indirectly, which is one reason its effects are subtle and individual.
What studies have observed
- The ECS includes receptors (CB1, CB2), the body’s own endocannabinoids, and the enzymes that build and break them down.
- Unlike THC, CBD does not strongly bind CB1, which is consistent with it being non-intoxicating.
- CBD’s wider interactions (with non-cannabinoid targets) are an active area of study.
Read this with caution
- ECS science is still developing; mechanisms in a dish do not always translate to felt effects.
- Individual variation in the ECS may explain why responses differ.
The bottom line
Understanding the ECS explains why CBD is non-intoxicating and why effects are gentle and personal, but mechanism is not the same as proven benefit.
